New York sportsbooks earned a record $163 million in gross gaming revenue in March, according to new figures from the state gaming commission.

It shattered the previous record of $149 million set in January, and it represents a 40% year-on-year increase compared to the same period in 2022.

However, it did not beat the national record of $208 million set in Ohio during January 2023, the first month of legal sports betting in the Buckeye State.

New York sportsbooks handled $1.79 billion in March, and they held 9.1% of that total in revenue.

The handle was 9% higher than in March 2022, but the higher hold rate led to the record-breaking revenue figures.

FanDuel maintained its dominance by handling $740.1 million in New York during March, which is the largest monthly handle for a single operator in US sports betting history.

DraftKings was next with $589.8 million, followed by Caesars Sportsbook ($237.5 million), BetMGM ($121.2 million) and BetRivers ($49.9 million).

FanDuel held $79.6 million in gross gaming revenue, while DraftKings’ $52 million was the company’s largest since launching an online sportsbook in 2018.

New York takes a 51% tax rate on gross gaming revenue, so it earned $83 million in March, which will be redirected to education and other public services.

Operators have railed against the high tax rate, with DraftKings emerging as the most vocal critic, but regulators have shown no signs of reducing it.
