MLB 2024 Free Agent Market

Spring training has commenced in MLB, signaling the start of a new season.

However, several high-profile free agents remain unsigned as Opening Day approaches.

Certain teams will have to manage without the contributions of Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery, Matt Chapman, and others this season.

Carlos Santana agreed to a deal with the Twins, Gary Sánchez joined the Brewers, and Clayton Kershaw re-signed with the Dodgers.

Jorge Soler signed with the Giants and Amed Rosario inked a deal with the Rays.

Tim Anderson agreed to a one-year contract with the Marlins, while Gio Urshela joined the Tigers.

Other notable signings include Rhys Hoskins joining the Brewers, Josh Hader bolstering the Astros' bullpen with a five-year deal, and Justin Turner heading to the Blue Jays.

Despite these signings, the free agent market remains active for top talents like Snell, Montgomery, and Chapman.

Cody Bellinger for the Chicago Cubs

The Cubs re-signed Bellinger, who returned from two injury-filled seasons with an impressive 2023 campaign, last Sunday.

His noteworthy offensive performance marked the utility player's 10th-place finish in the National League MVP race, and a .525 slugging percentage, which qualified him for the Utility Silver Slugger Award.

Although his performance was impressive on the surface, concerns regarding his hard-hit rate persist. Teams have been hesitant to offer long-term deals due to these concerns.

Nevertheless, the Cubs had him agreeing to a fresh three-year contract, valued at $80 million, that includes opt-out clauses following the initial two seasons.

Other Free Agents and Potential Matches

Of CBS Sports' Top 10 free agents, three remain unsigned. They are Blake Snell, Matt Chapman, and Jordan Montgomery.

Blake Snell – New York Yankees, Six-Year Deal

We all saw a remarkable performance from two-time Cy Young Award recipient, Snell, who boasted the lowest ERA (2.25) and highest ERA+ (182) in the league.

He is the seventh in a short list of pitchers in MBL history who have won the award in both leagues - American League in 2018 and then, again, in the National League this 2023.

However, concerns about his inconsistent performance between award-winning campaigns and high walk totals have deterred teams from offering large contracts.

Despite this, the Yankees appear to be a potential fit for Snell, who could help anchor their rotation. The Phillies, Mets, and Diamondbacks could be eyeing him too.

Matt Chapman – San Francisco Giants, Five-Year Deal

Chapman's defensive prowess is well-documented. He boasts four Gold Glove Awards, including 2023, two Platinum Glove Awards, two Fielding Bible Awards, and a Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award (2018).

His bat, however, presents some questions.

In 2023, his performances were inconsistent throughout the season.

Teams are concerned about Chapman's power production shifting to center field and his ability to hit left-handed pitching effectively.

The Giants, who have J.D. Davis at third base, could be a potential fit for Chapman as they seek to improve both their lineup and defense. The Dodgers, Blue Jays, and the Yankees might be interested as well.

Jordan Montgomery – Boston Red Sox, Five-Year Deal

Montgomery had an impressive postseason performance with the Rangers in 2023, but his high price tag has kept suitors away.

The lefty's repertoire and ability to limit hard contact make him a valuable asset, particularly for teams seeking starting pitching depth.

He may not be star material but he is reliable, has high-grade control, has durability, and can be part of something good when cast accordingly.

The Red Sox, looking to remain competitive in the AL East, could be a potential landing spot for Montgomery. The Cardinals, Yankees, and Rangers could be too.
