France's Quarterfinal Win at 2024 Paris Olympics: the Gobert Situation

Rudy Gobert's role in France's stunning quarterfinal win over Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics has become a hot topic following his limited playing time. Gobert, who played only three minutes in the game, cited a finger injury as the reason for his diminished minutes, while French coach Vincent Collet pointed to strategic matchup decisions.

An Unexpected Bench Role

Gobert's absence from the starting lineup raised eyebrows, particularly given his NBA stature and usual prominence on the team. Draymond Green, speaking on his podcast, highlighted the surprise, noting, "To be taken out of the lineup on any other team in the Olympics as an NBA player not named Team USA is kind of crazy."

Coach Collet defended his decision, explaining, "They play small ball. I wanted Wemby to start at five, that's why I put Yabusele at four. The other change was Isaia Cordinier for Evan Fournier because I wanted a defensive starting five." This strategic move paid off, with Guerschon Yabusele and Isaia Cordinier combining for 42 points to lead France to victory.

Gobert's Injury

Gobert attributed his limited minutes to a finger injury sustained in practice, which required surgery just before the game. "I have confidence in my teammates, the coaches. The plan worked, given how we started the match. There were several reasons why I didn't play, between the matchups but also what can happen in training, with the injuries. It was a good decision in any case," Gobert shared. "I was on the operating table last night. To be able to play in an Olympic quarterfinal, it was incredible."

Collet acknowledged the injury's role in his decision-making but emphasized the effectiveness of the lineup adjustments. "Not only. It's the main one. He's a good player. I know he has pain in his finger despite the surgeon saying he could play. He didn't know exactly, but finally, this morning, he said, 'I can play.' My idea was to protect him if I could do it," Collet explained. "As it was working well with the other big men, I preferred to keep him on the bench. He will be ready for the next game."

Victory Against Canada

France's triumph over a previously unbeaten Canadian team was a significant achievement. Victor Wembanyama, who started at center in place of Gobert, finished with seven points. His role, along with the contributions from Yabusele and Cordinier, were pivotal in securing the win. Collet's decision to bring Gobert off the bench in favor of a more athletic and defensive lineup paid off, showcasing France's depth and tactical versatility.

Looking Ahead

As France prepares for its semifinal matchup with Germany, Gobert's status remains a point of interest. Although he is expected to be ready for the game, it remains to be seen whether he will regain his starting position. Gobert himself maintains a positive outlook, emphasizing the importance of team success and the strategic decisions that have brought France this far.

In the face of adversity and unexpected changes, France's ability to adapt and innovate under pressure is a testament to its coaching staff and players' resilience. The semifinal against Germany promises to be another test of these attributes, with Gobert aiming to make a full comeback and contribute to his team's pursuit of Olympic glory.
