NBA Review: Who Came Out on Top This Weekend?
As the weekend’s go, that was one of the best we have seen this season. The quality of Basketball on offer was unbelievable, and we can’t wait to get to the next fixtures upcoming this week. Before we do that it makes sense to take a look at what shaped the weekend and how that impacted the standings. We will look ahead at how those outcomes might affect the NBA games this week. Let’s dive into the best of the action right now.
Denver Nuggets 116-104 Phoenix Suns
Another game, another win for the Nuggets as they start to look like serious championship contenders. The Nuggets took full advantage of this opportunity, and they are up in the second NBA Eastern spot after twelve wins and three defeats this season. It was the story of three players that delivered this outcome for Denver. The trio of Will Barton, Paul Millsap, and Jamal Murray racked up 67 points between them. Next up for the Nuggets is the Wizards, which should be another win.
It’s been a fifty/fifty kind of season for the Suns, and their record of 8-8 tells that story on its own. It was never a game we expected them to win when looking at the form of the opposition, but it’s crunch time for Phoenix. The Suns need to put a run of form together if they want to have a chance at a little glory. They will also face the Wizards next and may steal a win if the Nuggets cause them enough damage first.
Houston Rockets 123-137 Dallas Mavericks
The Rockets are in free-fall after this heavy defeat at the hands of the Mavericks. They need to get back on the winning road quickly if they want anything positive from the season. Sure, their recent games have been against some of the best in the NBA, but three losses on the run isn’t Championship form by a country mile. The Nuggets, the Clippers and now the Mavericks have taken wins from Houston in the last three games. Nothing short of a victory when they play the Heat will do.
Now we take a look at the Mavericks, and they are storming in the NBA at the moment. This was the fifth win on the bounce for Dallas. They are up to fourth in the NBA Western and passed this test of their NBA Championship credentials in this game. Luka Dončić was unplayable, scoring an unbelievable 41 points and providing ten assists. It’s another massive test coming next for Dallas, and we predict they will overcome the power of the Clippers.
LA Clippers 134-109 New Orleans Pelicans
What a win this was and the Clippers are doing the business in the NBA this season. This was another routine victory and takes them to 12-5 for the season and third in the NBA Western. Montrezl Harrell was the man of the game for his side and put in an eye-catching performance and 34 points. Next up is a whole new challenge against the team one behind them, the Mavericks. Our money is on them slipping up to the side right behind them in the standings.
It was a massive ask before the game to back the Pelicans, and as the tie unfolded, you could see why for yourself. Often outplayed by the Clippers in this one, it’s back to the drawing board for New Orleans. It wasn’t through lack of hard work, but the coach and fans will be concerned with the lack of quality in defense. They have to try and perform better against the Lakers next, but they aren’t winning that game.
Memphis Grizzlies 108-109 LA Lakers
This was one of the most significant upsets of the season thanks to the thrilling performance from the Grizzlies. They came out swinging and ended the first period with a ten-point lead. It didn’t last, and although they still led at the halfway point, the Lakers took the win at the death. They can take a lot of positives from this result and will look to build on it when they come up against the Pacers.
Crisis averted at the last minute for the Lakers and considering the wins for the chasing teams in the NBA Western it could prove critical at the end of the season. They didn’t look themselves to start with, and it almost cost them their first defeat in seven games. Now the Lakers must refocus and get a result when they face the Spurs, and we back them to do just that.
The games this week are guaranteed to give us another bunch of talking points. We will be back with our news and predictions update later this week. We saw some surprises this weekend, and some of the teams need to bounce back into action with a positive performance. We will bring you all the latest, so stay tuned for the next update on the NBA.
