Summer League Showcases Bright Future for NBA Hopefuls
The NBA's Las Vegas Summer League has wrapped up, with the Miami Heat clinching the title on Monday night. The nearly two-week-long event provided a platform for emerging talents to showcase their skills, and several players seized the opportunity to make a name for themselves.
Top Performers Shine
Among the standout performers were Jordan Miller from the Los Angeles Clippers and Jalen Wilson from the Brooklyn Nets. Wilson, who was officially named the NBA's Summer League MVP, was also voted second-team all-summer league. Despite the Clippers falling short of reaching the title game, Miller impressed many with his consistent performance, averaging 25.4 points over five games. He had an explosive 36-point outing against the Denver Nuggets, shooting 52.9% from the floor, including eight successful three-pointers out of 20 attempts.
Wilson also made his mark by averaging 21.8 points in five games. This stellar performance in Las Vegas comes after a rookie season where he averaged 5.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assists over 43 games, clearly indicating his upward trajectory as he heads into his sophomore season.
Rookie Class Impresses
Houston Rockets guard Reed Sheppard and Los Angeles Lakers guard Dalton Knecht emerged as the leading scorers from the rookie class. Sheppard, statistically the best 3-point shooter in his draft class, recorded 11 steals in four games and managed to hit 5 of 18 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Knecht faced a slow start during the Lakers' initial summer league stint at the California Classic but continued to strive for improvement.
Alex Sarr, the No. 2 overall pick from the 2024 draft class, faced some challenges, averaging 5.5 points in four games for the Washington Wizards. However, his teammate Carlton Carrington posted an impressive 13 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, and two steals against the Bucks, leading some to speculate, "There could be a world where Carrington has the best rookie season of any of his Wizards teammates -- including No. 2 overall pick Alex Sarr."
Veterans and Rising Stars
Scotty Pippen Jr. showed his potential by scoring 29 points in a loss to the Heat during the title game, and recorded a triple-double with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in a win over the Clippers. As he enters his third NBA season, Pippen seems poised to make a more significant impact.
Kel'el Ware was another standout in the title game, achieving a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Ware showcased his consistency by scoring at least 11 points in all eight summer league games in Las Vegas and at the California Classic.
Donovan Clingan also had a noticeable summer league performance, averaging 8.8 rebounds and 4.3 blocks in just under 26 minutes per game, along with making three 3-pointers.
Matas Buzelis played in five games in Vegas, consistently scoring in double digits, and notched a notable performance with 28 points, five rebounds, and two steals against the Warriors. GG Jackson also demonstrated his burgeoning talent with 28 points, nine rebounds, and two steals in the title game loss to Miami, building off an impressive rookie campaign.
Tristan da Silva contributed significantly for Orlando, averaging 17.7 points, five rebounds, three assists, and 1.3 steals over three games, shooting an impressive 60.7%. His efficiency from beyond the arc was also notable, hitting 7-of-17 attempts (58.8%).
