The Detroit Lions released Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore for the entire 2023 season after they were suspended indefinitely for betting on NFL games last season.

Shaka Toney of the Washington Commanders received the same punishment, and that trio will not be able to apply for reinstatement until the end of the season. The Lions responded by releasing both Cephus and Moore.

Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams of the Lions were also suspended for the first six games of the 2023 regular season for gambling violations.

They can still take part in preseason games, as their violations were less serious – they wagered on non-NFL games.

“The gambling policy, which is annually reviewed with all NFL personnel, including players, prohibits anyone in the NFL from engaging in any form of gambling in any club or league facility or venue, including the practice facility,” the league said in a press release.

“A league review uncovered no evidence indicating any inside information was used or that any game was compromised in any way.”

Detroit Lions Executive Vice President and General Manager Brad Holmes added: “These players exhibited decision making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules.

“We have made the decision to part ways with Quintez and C.J. immediately. We are disappointed by the decision making demonstrated by Stanley and Jameson and will work with both players to ensure they understand the severity of these violations and have clarity on the league rules moving forward.”
