Texans Waive Diontae Johnson Ahead of Pivotal Chiefs Clash
The Houston Texans have decided to part ways with wide receiver Diontae Johnson, a move announced just before their high-stakes divisional-round duel against the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite an eventful year that saw Johnson don jerseys for four different NFL teams, his stint with the Texans was short-lived.
Brief Tenure in Houston
Johnson’s journey with the Texans began when they claimed him on December 23 after he was waived by the Baltimore Ravens. He quickly saw some action on the field, participating in two games. In the Texans' regular-season finale against the Tennessee Titans, Johnson caught two passes for a total of 12 yards. During the wild-card victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, he was targeted once, securing the pass for another 12 yards while logging 16 snaps on offense. His impact was minimal, with just 22 percent of the game’s offensive playing time, but it wasn’t for lack of effort on his part.
A Turbulent Year for Johnson
This year has been a whirlwind for Johnson, who has been traded and released twice. His journey spanned across the Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens, and finally, the Houston Texans. Originally traded by Baltimore to the Panthers along with a sixth-round pick for a fifth-round pick, Johnson found himself back on the waiver wire following a suspension for conduct detrimental to the team, mere weeks before the Texans picked him up.
The former Pro Bowl receiver, known for his standout 2021 season with Pittsburgh—where he racked up 107 catches for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns—has struggled to regain that form amid frequent team changes.
Facing Challenges with Depth
Meanwhile, the Texans are bracing for their matchup against the Chiefs without key wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell, who are notably absent. This absence puts the spotlight on other receivers like John Metchie III, Robert Woods, and Xavier Hutchinson, who will support Nico Collins in the receiving corps. It’s a test of depth and capability for the team as they prepare to face a formidable opponent.
Coach Ryans’ Perspective
Reflecting on the decision to waive Johnson, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans expressed a sense of urgency moving forward. “With Diontae, unfortunately, it didn’t work out and we’re on to the Chiefs,” Ryans remarked, indicating a focus on the immediate challenges ahead rather than dwelling on roster changes.
In this dynamic and demanding league, player movements and strategic adjustments are part of the narrative as teams strive for excellence. For the Texans, the focus now squarely shifts to the road ahead and their upcoming battle in Kansas City.
