MLS 2020 Review Matchday 2: 5 Things We Learned

What We Learned

The second weekend of Major League Soccer has been and gone, with shakeups up and down the country rippling right through the league. A few interesting storylines are starting to develop across the division and a couple of sides are already looking a little bit more desperate for points than they would have liked by now. From the biggest winners, to the heaviest losers, let's take a look back at matchday 2 in the league, assess how our MLS picks performed and see what we learned.

LA and Philadelphia Play Out The Thriller

They say save the best until last, and it was very much a case of that saying coming true in LA's thrilling 3-3 tie with the Union on Monday. Philadelphia

(+3300)

had been taught a lesson in taking their chances by Dallas

(+4000)

in their opening game, however Sergio Santos' stunning finish in minute 29 and Jakob Glesnes's 40 yard screamer in the 48th were not the kinds of finishes you would expect to see from a team shy in front of goal. LA

(+333)

are Supporters Shield champions for a reason however and they came back into the game not once, not twice, but three times over the course of the evening. 3-3 the final here.

Atlanta Win Despite Josef's Injury

Every Five Stripes fan had their hearts in their mouths when talisman striker Josef Martinez went down with a torn ACL in matchday 1 against Nashville

(+20000)

, however the side bounced back with a good display against FC Cincinnati

(+10000)

. In Pity Martinez and Ezequiel Barco, Frank De Boer has two of Major League Soccer's most exciting and creative forces and, although they were the difference in this fixture, United

(+750)

are going to need them both to step up plenty more times before the season is up. Whilst our MLS predictions might have tipped them, it's clear that FC Cincinnati are still in the midst of a rebuild going into matchday 3.

Questions Rising Over Chicharito and Galaxy

Two matchdays in, and things are not looking too hot for Javier Hernandez and LA Galaxy

(+2000)

. The Mexican forward has yet to find the net since his arrival from Sevilla, the side are lacking some serious creativity from the middle and slumped to a loss in their opening home game against the Whitecaps

(+10000)

at the weekend. Finding Chicharito in the box more has to be the drill to work on in training for the Galaxy going forward. For Vancouver, their win was their first of the season and the perfect response to a disappointing 1-3 home loss to Kansas

(+2000)

in matchday 1.

Promising Signs, But No Points For Inter Miami

Whilst they might still be waiting on their first points in Major League Soccer, there are more reasons for Inter Miami to be pleased with their start to life in the division than disappointed by it. A wonder goal by Carlos Vela was the only thing separating Miami

(+10000)

from the 2019 Supporters Shield winners in matchday 1, and their second game against D.C.

(+2500)

was equally tight. Having raced into the lead with their first ever goal in just the second minute, Miami were harshly pulled back into reality with a red card to Roman Torres and two goals in two minutes completing D.C.'s wild comeback. Plenty of lessons learned, but still no points to show for David Beckham and co.

NYCFC Looking Set To Upset The Odds

NYCFC

(+1000)

romped into last year's MLS Conference finals by some margin last year, but are already looking like they might be on the verge of a fall from grace this year. Despite coming into the new season once again nestled in amongst the favourites for glory, the Boys in Blue are yet to claim a single point or even trouble the opposition net from their first two games. We called their match on the road against Toronto

(+1000)

the fixture of the weekend, and Toronto once again showed that killer instinct New York are currently missing, running out 1-0 winners. Dallas await NYCFC in matchday 3 so be sure to check back in with us to hear if we think it'll be more of the same for Ronny Deila's side.
