In what was a shock to most soccer markets, LA Galaxy were the only road team to pick up the win in the first round of the MLS Play Offs, beating no.4 side Minnesota United thanks to goals from Sebastian Lletget and Jonathan Dos Santos. Whilst Minnesota will be disappointed to have missed the opportunity to take the homefield advantage, soccer fans will now be treated to an El Trafico derby in the Play Offs this year.
Having failed to make the Play Offs for the past two regular seasons, Minnesota fans might have thought they were going to be witnessing their first ever win in the competition as the came into the game as +101 favourites. They had finished one place and two points ahead of an out of sorts Galaxy who, Zlatan or not, arrived at Allianz Field as underdogs at +237.
Minnesota actually had a good amount of control for most of the game, moving the ball well across the park and going close a couple of times early in the first and second halves. It was the MLS’ most successful ever side who found their way in front however, with Lletget opening the scoring in minute 70. Galaxy looked to have sealed the match thanks to Dos Santos’ worldie strike, though Jan Gregus was on hand to deliver a nervy finish for Galaxy after another good finish from outside the box in minute 87. The experienced LA outfit were able to see out the rest of the match however, delivering a badly needed win for the Galaxy faithful.
Despite overcoming a tough obstacle against the odds at Allianz Field, LA Galaxy remain heavy outsiders to reclaim their MLS crown at +1600. Derby days throw the betting odds out the window however, and Galaxy face off against Supporter’s Shield winners LAFC on October 24th.
